Dr. Federica Capanna

Dr. Federica Capanna

Federica Capanna is a medical doctor, fetal-maternal specialist and the Medical Director of Gynous in Geneva, Switzerland. Originally from L’Aquila, Italy, she developed an early passion for science and a strong commitment to caring for others, which naturally guided her toward a career in medicine.

Federica completed her medical studies in L’Aquila before training and practising in Perugia under the guidance of Professor Gian Carlo Di Renzo, who played a pivotal role in shaping her early development in fetal-maternal medicine. She went on to expand her expertise in leading perinatal centres across Paris, Zurich, Geneva, Baden and Lausanne, training under internationally recognised specialists including Prof. Josef Wisser, Prof. Leonhard Schäffer, Prof. David Baud and Prof. Yvan Vial. Their mentorship supported the refinement of her clinical skills and reinforced her commitment to providing compassionate, evidence-based care.

Her work across Europe enabled Federica to collaborate closely with distinguished fetal-medicine experts and gain extensive experience in managing complex and high-risk pregnancies. These experiences strengthened her dedication to supporting families through the uncertainties and emotional challenges that can arise during pregnancy.

The concept for FETAL EXPERT took shape during the COVID-19 pandemic, when access to specialised care became increasingly limited for expectant parents worldwide. Together with Prof. Gian Carlo Di Renzo and her colleague Dr. Jonathan Baert, Federica envisioned an innovative platform capable of connecting families with leading maternal–fetal specialists regardless of geographical barriers. Guided by her clinical experience — and her own empathy as a mother — she sought to ensure that every family could receive clear, personalised, and reliable medical guidance when they need it most.

Today, FETAL EXPERT reflects Federica Capanna’s deep commitment to advancing maternal–fetal health. Through her leadership, she strives to empower women with accurate information, expert interpretation, and meaningful support during some of the most delicate and transformative moments of their lives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Second Medical Opinion in Fetal-Maternal Medicine

A second medical opinion in Fetal-Maternal medicine is an additional consultation requested by a patient to confirm or refute a diagnosis or medical recommendation related to your pregnancy or your fetus.

A second opinion can offer an additional perspective, different expertise, and validation of medical recommendations, which can help patients make informed decisions regarding their health and that of their unborn baby. A second opinion can be hugely valuable as it can validate an existing diagnosis as correct or help clarify the meaning of said condition to provide reassurance and empower you to know your making the right decision. In some instances, it can offer an alternative view to support a differing treatment approach.

On our website, the second opinion process typically involves the submission of relevant medical records, evaluation by experienced specialists in Fetal-Maternal medicine, and the provision of a detailed report containing personalized recommendations.

The doctors on our platform are professors in Fetal-Maternal medicine, with extensive experience in the field and a thorough understanding of the latest medical practices and technological advancements.

The timeframe may vary depending on the complexity of the case and the availability of specialists. However, we strive to provide an opinion report in the shortest possible time frame to assist our patients.

For us, patient confidentiality is of utmost importance. We have strict protocols and a highly secured website in place to ensure that all medical records and information shared for the second opinion are kept secure and confidential.

If you don’t have all the required documents you can send a link to your doctor who can upload directly the required files. The final second opinion will be shared only with you.

The cost of obtaining a second opinion is based on two models: €390 for a written 2nd opinion report. €490 for a video consultation 2nd opinion.

Seeking a second opinion in Fetal-Maternal medicine may be beneficial in cases of complex pregnancies, high-risk obstetric situations, conflicting diagnoses, fetal malformation or when additional clarity or reassurance is needed regarding follow-up or treatment options.

Initiating the process is usually straightforward and involves submitting a request for a second opinion through our online portal. Our Fetal Expert instruction online tool will guide you through the necessary steps and requirements for a thorough evaluation.
